Amsterdam Noord provides a creative, buzzing backdrop to a wealth of restaurants, bars, shops, festivals, and hotels. It’s a part of the city that’s become irreplaceable for the municipality of Amsterdam. Before that, this urban district walked to the beat of its own drum. What used to be a raw and creative space has matured into a delightful place to be.
The most well-known location in Noord is the NDSM wharf (Nederlandse Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, or Dutch Dock and Shipyard Company). This company was based in Amsterdam-Oost during the 19th century, but grew quickly. Especially because many of the ships that went to and from the Dutch Indies needed to be replaced. So NSM scouted out a new location. On the other side of the IJ. This location became the Dutch Dock and Shipyard Company: the NDSM.
As the years went by, heavy industry left the city. The resulting empty space was lacking in the rest of the city. Creatives discovered Noord, and the district became more and more popular. Creative strongholds began to appear. Makes sense, because the district’s location next to the IJ with a view of the city is unique. As demand for housing increased, it was only logical that Noord proved to be the the best place for new developments with international appeal.
